LG Electronics has backtracked on reports Sky purchased 15,000 3D TVs from the Korean manufacturer.

Yesterday, the TV manufacturer claimed Sky had purchased the TV sets in preparation for the roll-out of the pub-only 3D sports channel next month.

"The deal to supply the broadcaster with 15,000 3D TVs is the largest deal of its kind," LG said in its original statement.

"Sky plans to install the TVs in public venues across the UK in advance of plans to broadcast weekly Premier League matches in 3D beginning this spring."

However, LG has today issued a statement saying that while it is working with the broadcaster "to bring 3D TV to pubs and clubs throughout the UK and Ireland", the figure of 15,000 units was inaccurate.

"LG will supply 3D TVs nationwide to support the launch of Sky 3D, Europe's first 3D TV channel. The channel goes live in pubs and clubs from April 2010," the company said.

"Sky is helping support its commercial customers purchase TVs direct from a UK third party," the statement added.

Sky trialled the service in January, when it broadcast a Premiership match between Arsenal and Manchester United in 3D in nine UK pubs.

Sky 3D will be made available to all Sky+HD customers later in the year and will offer a range of content.
