Future of 3-D TV Murky as ESPN Ends Channel

Posted on 17 Jun 2013 at 01:01AM

nThat impression was cemented last week when ESPN, the nation’s largest sports network and an early adopter of 3-D technology, said it was turning off its three-year-old 3-D channel. A spokeswoman said the decision was “due to limited consumer adoption of 3-D services to the home.”

nThe news spurred debate about whether anyone would be left watching in 3-D soon, or whether anything would be available worth watching.

n“Many in the industry have said over the last few years that if ESPN ever pulled the plug on 3-D TV, that would be the format’s final chapter,” Phillip Swann, the publisher of the industry Web site TVPredictions.com, wrote after…

3D TV homes set to rocket, but glasses remain a problem

Posted on 22 Apr 2013 at 12:12PM

The number of 3D TV homes will rocket from 13.5 million at the end of last year to over 100 million by 2017, according to DTVE publisher Informa Telecoms & Media.

However, the 3D TV sector faces several challenges including a lack of content, scarcity of channels, high production costs and the fact that many viewers do not like wearing glasses.

There is currently a fierce debate in the industry as to whether 3D TV has a viable future, but Informa says that the sector will grow strongly because of the backing of key industry players including set manufacturers, platform owners and the Hollywood studios.

The 112.7 million 3D homes by 2017 will be about 8% of the al…

3D And 4K TVs Face Similar Set of Challenges

3D And 4K TVs Face Similar Set of Challenges

Posted on 24 Apr 2013 at 06:06AM

With 4K TVs now a firm reality, the TV industry is now faced with a situation similar to what it was when the 3D TV was first launched, or maybe even HD TV. Its the product that came first followed by a mad scampering to live up to it to ensure the product survives. HD TV lived to tell the tale and is still going strong though the same can’t be said of both 3D TV and the latest 4K TVs even if both offer significant leap in technology. The 3D TVs can still be considered to be in the struggling phase and continues to be bogged down by almost the same set of problems as it was when it first burst into the scene.

If the extra price premium that a 3D TV commands isn’t a probl…

3D TV Expected To Breach 100 Million User Base By 2017

The 3D TV segment isn’t exactly flourishing at the moment though there is plenty of action still left in it. Like the number of homes featuring a 3D TV is expected to make it past the 100 million mark by 2017, a steep climb from the 13.5 million recorded at the end of last year. However, that would still represent just 8 percent of the total homes to have a TV. The above figures have been projected by TBI publisher Informa Telecoms & Media that is claiming 3D TV owners will shoot up to 112.7 million by 2017.

However, the segment will still be plagued by the usual factors such as the lack of adequate content or scarcity of enough number of channels. The fact that glasses…
