Nintendo has announced its new gaming console, the 2DS which has one D less. Or to put it in another way, the console has been stripped of its 3D capabilities. The above move is hardly surprising as we move into what can be described as a phase where 3D is finally settling down or is achieving a state of maturity. There has been a general lack of interest towards 3D, something exemplified by the falling ticket sales of 3D movies, the shutting down of 3D channels and so on.

For Nintendo too these are desperate times and the company is aiming to settle down around its core areas of competence, that of offering a pure no frills gaming experience. The new Nintendo 2DS can be considered to be the outcome of just such a thought process. The device is more tablet like in that it remains open and is sans the clamshell design that allowed the previous 3DS to be actually closed along a hinge in the middle. The design is also considered weird by many, what it a tapering lower end giving it a wedge like shape.

The design is not the only striking thing about the 2DS, for the new device is also cheaper at just $130. That’s $40 less than the Nintendo 3DS. That won’t stop it from playing all the games though.

Nintendo has been struggling against a slump in demand for its hardware against the backdrop of an ever growing demand for smartphones and tablets that is attracting the lions share of efforts towards creating more gaming titles for the Android and iOS platforms.
